about Genevieve

Genevieve Layman is the author, photographer, designer and publisher of Gather & Make. She is a registered horticultural therapist (HTR) with the American Horticultural Therapy Association (AHTA). Genevieve currently offers climate adapted residential garden design to the Portland community. She has facilitated seasonal workshops around Portland and out of her home studio for more than 10 years.

Her passion for people/plant interactions has lead her down various horticultural paths. Her extensive experience includes owning and operating a plant nursery, professional gardening and design, and as the former horticultural therapy program director at Earthtones, a renowned horticultural and music therapy company in Portland Oregon.

She has worked as a lead gardener for the nationally acclaimed gardens at Portland’s Legacy Health Hospital and is the current lead gardener and volunteer coordinator at the Portland Memory Garden. Genevieve has presented several workshops at national horticultural therapy conference and other national conferences such as the Alzheimer’s Associations McGinty conference . She loves studying nonviolent communication, spending time with her toddler son Julian and husband and of course spending time in her own garden.

Genevieve’s background in horticultural therapy combined with her depth of plant knowledge make a design experience with Genevieve one of a kind. Quality landscape design considers first and foremost the people who interact with garden. Genevieve listens carefully and helps clients get clear on how their garden can best enrich their lives, then creates a doable plan with the clients budget in mind. She loves supporting clients in deepening their relationship to their garden and fostering new plant connections. Sustainability, purpose, beauty and flow are at the heart of her designs. Genevieve loves people + plants and designing gardens that relate to their keepers is her passion.
